Introduction to a New Momma

Hi guys! My name is Lillie Martin. I am a pre-nursing major, minoring in Spanish and psychology. So why am I in this class? Well, my big brother told me that it was awesome, and... I would have to agree. I haven't really done any creative writing since high school, so I forgot how much I like it! Anyways, some stuff about me. I am a junior. I work as a waitress at a small mom and pop restaurant in Edmond called Colby's Grill, and I am also a tumbling coach at a cheer gym here in Norman called Oklahoma Twisters. I was actually a cheerleader from the time I was in about 2nd grade until I graduated high school, although I am not generally what you would think of as the "cheerleader" type. I am doing life a little backwards right now, but hey, I'm lovin' it! I had a beautiful baby girl in May (on Mother's Day to be exact), and she is the most amazing little human on the face of this Earth. She just recently learned how to walk, and she is only 8 months old! She is our little busy body- that's for sure! My fiancé, her dad and my high school sweetheart, and I are getting married on February 9th, and I could not be more excited! My life took a shocking, yet extremely rewarding turn, but I am still planning on pursuing the same goals I have had since high school. A few of them just came a little sooner than expected. :) I will find out in April if I am accepted into OU's nursing program-fingers crossed! Once I become an RN, I would like to work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I have wanted to pursue this career since I was a child, ever since I learned what the NICU was from an episode of Grey's Anatomy. My interest in this career has further grown as my sister works in the NICU at OU's Children's Hospital, and my daughter had her own little NICU stay for a week after she was born. Eventually, I would like to become a nurse practitioner and maybe even open my own practice. I am very passionate about my family and my career, and I can't wait to see what the future holds! Also, after creating this blog I realized that I'm actually worse at the whole tech-y thing than I thought.. So bear with me!

  1. Oh my gosh, your little girl is the cutest ever, Lillie: thank you for sharing these adorable pictures, and congratulations to both momma and poppa! I'm always so glad when parents take this class because you can never have enough stories ready to go for when the little ones grow up. They will need stories! And even little ones like your Brianna Lee can enjoy nursery rhymes. Maybe you will even want to do a nursery rhymes project in this class to find the best nursery rhymes to sing and play with her. CONGRATULATIONS again, and I hope you will get good news from the nursing school in spring! Meanwhile, enjoy every moment of your new family adventure, and thanks again for sharing the lovely pictures here. :-)

  2. Another fellow aspiring nurse practitioner! It's nice to meet you, Lillie! It sounds like you're a busy bee and I really admire that. Your family looks wonderful! Your daughter is very cute, too :^). It's really cool that her birthday is on Mother's Day so now it's extra special. I'm also waiting to hear back on the nursing application! My fingers crossed for you, too!

  3. Your little girl is so precious! I can't believe she is already walking too! My little brother started walking at 9 months and I thoughts that was crazy early. Congratulations! You and I have so much in common with us both being pre-nursing and having an interest in the field of psychology and our end goal being to become Nurse Practitioners. I really hope you hear some good news and get accepted this spring! Best of luck!

  4. Hi Lillie! First off, congratulations! That is so exciting to have your first little one and getting to marry the love of your life! I know how hard nursing can be, I came into college thinking I wanted to do nursing, but have found my passion in occupational therapy! I wish you good luck, you sound fully prepared to put in the work and accomplish everything you want in life!

  5. Lillie,

Congrats on having your daughter and on your upcoming wedding! Your daughter is cute and it’s crazy that she is already walking at only 8 months! I actually considered having psychology as a minor because I really enjoy that area of study but it just didn’t work out. That is awesome though that you are so passionate about nursing and becoming a NICU nurse. Good luck on being accepted into nursing program and the rest of your undergrad. Nice to meet you!

  6. Hi, Lillie! Congratulations on your beautiful little girl and on marrying your high school sweet heart! That is SO incredibly exciting and I hope you are loving every second. That's so cool that you are pursuing all of your dreams, even if they've turned out in a different order than you planned. My roommates are in Nursing School and I know OU Nursing is extremely competitive, but you seem to be very prepared and I'm sure that will pay off with you getting accepted. I also have been hooked in the medical field after watching Grey's Anatomy, although I'm about to be a Physical Therapy student, so I think it's really cool that you're pursuing something you've always been passionate and excited about. Best of luck to you on Nursing School acceptance and your wedding and I hope you have a great semester!

  7. Lillie, you're getting married TODAY?! How exciting!! I hope you have a terrific day and things go smoothly! I got married a little over 6 and a half years ago and I can definitely remember the hurricane of emotions! That is super exciting, so CONGRATULATIONS!
Also, your family is so cute! Your daughter is adorable and you and your fiancé look so happy!! Thanks for introducing us to your little family. I enjoyed reading this and getting to know you a little.

  8. Lillie! Congratulations on becoming a mom and I'm assuming, being married! That is absolutely awesome to hear. My parents were 8th grade sweethearts, so I always love to hear stories about people with their grade school sweethearts (no such luck for me!). I think that nursing sounds like a great option for you! You sound awfully busy between working two jobs, being a new mom, and with your pre-nursing major! Good luck with OU, I hope you get in! I start at OU med in the fall this year!

  9. Well, by now you're a married woman, so congratulations! I hope you are enjoying being a wife. Your daughter is absolutely precious. It's awesome that you're a pre-nursing major. I have so many friends who are in that major as well and love it, so I'm glad you do too! I also admire how you are juggling work, school, being a mom, and now being a wife. That is a lot to handle, but I'm sure you are doing awesome at it. It was great to get to know you and I cannot wait to read what you have written!

  10. Your baby is so precious and congratulations! I understand the feeling of working two jobs and school, but I cannot imagine being a mom and wife at the same time. My mom was doing the same thing you are now (besides the married part) when she had me, so you are an incredibly strong woman, and I admire you whole heartedly!

  11. Hi Lillie,

Wow, pre-nursing with a minor is Spanish, that has got to be a difficult course load! I am in my final semester of Spanish (Intermediate Spanish to be exact) and I am definitely struggling to get through it, so I am impressed that you are minoring in it! I think being a coach for a sport you are passionate about would be a really great job! I was a cheerleader my freshman year of high school and really loved it!

  12. Lillie!
Your baby is a doll. I recently babysat my friend's 6 month old for a full 24 hours to give her a break and I must say, being a mom is EXHAUSTING. Being a step-in mom for 24 hours was extremely difficult and I learned that I am by no means ready to be a mom. Hats off to you-kids are seriously hard! I think you've got a great career path laid out in front of you; I think it will suit you well!

  13. Hi Lillie,
How cute and sweet is your baby! Kudos to you for being such a driven mom – going to school is already a full time mom so I really do applaud you for adding being a parent on top of it. I really like your writing style so far – keep it up! And keep us updated on your sweet baby!

    Sincerely,
    Erin

  14. Hello! Oh my goodness your baby is adorable! I admire you for being so hard working. I cannot imagine the late nights of having a little baby and still keeping up with school and everything else. That is exciting you are on track for the future career you want and that you are so passionate about it! Congrats on getting married recently as well!

  15. Hi Lillie!
It's nice to meet you! I think it's awesome that you are a pre-nursing major and getting a minor in Spanish and psychology. I just finished my minor in psychology, but honestly, I wish I had gotten my minor in Spanish instead. It would have served me better and I would know how to speak the language much better. Congrats on being a new mom! That's so exciting. You have a lovely family.

  16. Hi Lillie,
I decided to join this class for almost the same reason! I don’t have a brother, but a few friends suggested it to me. Props to you for juggling so much on your plate, and congrats on your beautiful baby! I was born on Mother’s Day as well! That’s pretty cool haha. Good luck on your future endeavors.

  17. Hey Lillie, congratulations on your marriage! Your life looks like it's pretty busy with work, studies, and family so it's great to see you're handling it so well. It's nice that you're actively pursuing the career path you wanted since you were a kid too. Also, good luck with your nursing school application! Not that you would need it, haha.

  18. Wow, you sound busy! You must be a really well-rounded person with that many interests--psychology, Spanish, nursing, cheer, and tumbling? I don't know how you'd find time for all of it with a fiance and a kid!

I always thought psychology was cool--it was a passion of mine in high school, but I never pursued it after graduating. It seems like no matter what you do, it would help you in one way or another. It definitely changed my outlook on a lot of things.

  19. Hi Lillie! What a precious little girl you have! You sound extremely busy, but also very successful.. good luck with your future in nursing school! I think it's cool that you're work at Oklahoma Twisters. I'm an OU cheerleader and I go there to stunt and tumble every once in a while to get some extra work in. I'm sure I'll see you around sometime!

  20. Hi Lillie! Being a tumbling coach must be really cool! One of my friends from Illinois who is a cheerleader now learned at a place called Midwest Twisters. It's funny to think that they have such similar names despite being in quite different places. My best friend also wants to work as a NICU nurse. I hope your dreams come true!

  21. Hello Lillie! First, I just want to say that your family is ADORABLE. Your little girl is so precious. Congrats on getting married! It's amazing to hear that you're able to still achieve your dreams with a little one, planning/having a wedding, and continuing on to your masters. I definitely don't think I could handle all of that on top of work and school. You're a super mom! Hopefully you'll receive some good news soon, if you haven't already, about the nursing program!

  22. Hi Lillie, your daughter is so stinkin’ cute! I must say it is very admirable that you are accomplishing so much and you have so many goals, all while juggling marriage and raising a child. That is some hard stuff, so seriously, props to you! I wish you the best of luck the rest of this semester, I can’t imagine how hard you have worked!

  23. Lillie! Your baby is the cutest! Her little smile makes me smile! I guess that now you are married. Huge congratulations to you both and your little girl! You guys seem really in love and I'm sure you'll have even more little babies for your little girl to play with. By the way, walking at 8 months is pretty incredible! You must be so proud.

  24. Hi Lillie,
That’s so fun that your daughter was born on Mother’s Day, what a way to start your first ever Mother’s Day! That is so cool that you are pursuing your dream of becoming a nurse, I bet that’s a little challenging to do with a child, but keep on working towards your goal! It amazing to get to fulfill a dream you have had for such a long time!

  25. Hey Lillie. Your daughter is adorable, not that you did not know that already. Is it too late to say congratulations on you engagement and subsequent marriage? I hope not. You said you were doing life backwards. I am not seeing how. Its not like there is a rule book. If you are happy, you are doing it right. Nursing is a very difficult career. It takes a very special person to do it, but you seem you seem like you will fit right in. I hope you make it.

  26. Hey Lillie, it's nice to meet you. Your daughter is the cutest! I don't think you're doing life backwards either. As long as you're happy and still doing things you love, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I bet it's tough balancing everything though. Congrats on all your milestones in life so far and good luck with everything that's still to come!

  27. Congratulations on your child and on a hopefully successful marriage, Lillie! Your daughter looks like a very sweet kid, and I'm sure you've got great stories to tell about parenthood!

It can't be the easiest job, being a nurse. You're very close to people with serious health issues, so the pressure must be rather heavy. But you seem to have a great deal of determination, so I'm certian you can power through it.

  28. Hey Lillie, nice to meet you! Congratulations on getting married and your little baby girl looks adorable, I'm sure she's a joy to have around! It's great that you're a passionate about your career and also hardworking. I wish you and your family all the best, good luck.

  29. Hey, Lillie! It is great to meet you and I'm surprised that I'm still finding people in the class who I haven't met yet! I think it's awesome that you have a little one! At first I was completely against having kids because I'm from a big family and I'm the oldest boy so I had to look out for everyone lol. But now that I'm getting a little older and have a fiancé, soon to wifey this May, I'm really looking forward to the idea of having a mini me running around!
I'm a server at Red Lobster here in Norman so if I ever stop by Colby's Grill I'll leave you a big tip! Because that's only right, right?! Lol Anyway, since April is almost over, I assume you've heard back on your acceptance into OU's medical program. I hope everything is working out in the best for you!

  30. Hey Lillie,
Great to get to know more about you! Your daughter is so cute and congrats on your marriage as well. That must be so hectic trying to balance school and everything else that you have to deal with. I think it is great that you are pursuing your passion to become a nurse. My mom is an RN and my sister is about to start the Baylor nursing program in Dallas. It is a stressful, but rewarding job and I know my family members love what they do. I think that is so funny that everything started from Grey's Anatomy. Good luck with the rest of the semester!

And good luck with OU's nursing program!! That's so cool that you want to be a nurse! And working in the NICU sounds super cool! Good luck with everything and congrats!
